Hostages

by Andrew MacGregor

The Howl & The Hum: “Hostages” - 4 mins 01s

This is one of the more story-driven promos we’ve sampled during lockdown, and it does a good job of tying social distancing into the narrative. Shot by Belgian directing duo the Roosens for The Howl & The Hum, 'Hostages' shows how it is possible to have a healthy break-up, so to speak, during a pandemic.

Canny framing underlines the ex-couple’s drastically altered circumstances, as they exchange possessions at a safe but awkward distance. There are also no histrionics to be found here - the Roosens instead keep things grounded and bittersweet, while the former lovers ensure there’s always a musical connection between them.
