Ghetto Love

by Andrew MacGregor

Wizkid: “Ghetto Love” - 3 mins 07s

This inviting promo for Wizkid's 'Ghetto Love' pays tribute to both one's roots and the humble cassette player, as the Nigerian chances upon his childhood gadget en route to the stage. Shot in loosely autobiographical style by director Adriaan Louw, we see how the man born Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun was - as the back of his jacket proclaims - "made in Lagos".

Flitting between the Nigerian capital, a light beam-filled warehouse, and a present-day recording studio, the promo is particularly effective when focused on Wizkid as a boy with headphones almost permanently attached. This makes the coda all the more touching, as the singer subtly acknowledges the power of escapism through music.
