Weir & Sons: “Ambition” - 90s
This handsomely made commercial for Dublin-based jewellers Weir & Son flits between the late nineteenth century and the present day, as the brand aim to show what a little get-up-and-go can achieve regardless of time or gender. As Scotsman Thomas Weir earns his stripes as an apprentice in 1869, Dubliner Eva juggles law studies with her part-time job in a café. The challenges they face may differ, but they're met with the same vigour. The moment when the timelines ‘meet' is slightly jarring, but it sums up the retailer's attitude towards the past, present, and future well. There's also a pleasingly old-school edge to the film - despite the proliferation of online shopping, it's good to see the art of window shopping is alive and well.
