Waitrose: A black and white issue.

by Jason Stone

Waitrose: “Snowed In” - 90s

Waitrose's Christmas commercial ticks most of the boxes you hope will receive an affirmative mark at this time of year, but you can't get away from a rather strange decision. While the scenario is a good one which lends itself to a depiction of the cosiest of Christmas meals, the decision to stay in black and white leaves the food itself looking unappealingly short of warmth.

It's a pity as there have been few seasonal commercials featuring snow this year and - as much as we know how unlikely it is that the day itself will be marked by any of the white stuff falling from the sky - it's a shared fantasy to picture a snowswept landscape as we draw back the curtains on the 25th.

It's famously said of a stopped clock that even it is correct twice a day... and it turns out the opposite is true too - even the most perfectly-calibrated machine is off-kilter once in a while. adam&eveDDB's firm handle on Christmas advertising is a little loose for once but we feel certain it's an aberration rather than a malaise.
