Singular Stories

by Syd Briscoe

Vue Cinemas: “Get Lost” - 60s

The release of the latest ‘Star Wars’ film - divisive as it may be - is an event which prompts those who don't usually indulge to take a trip to the cinema. So it's no surprise that Vue have tapped Finn himself, John Boyega, to narrate this ode to the power of the big screen.

Watching films on phones and tablets is all very well, says the ad, but it's not really watching them. The focus of the cinema experience, the absence of notifications and messages to check, offers a special kind of escapism from the relentless hustle of modern life.

The visuals illustrate this neatly, building from simple screen preoccupation to a claustrophobic digital cacophony which allows us to appreciate the tonal contrast. It's an effective way to remind viewers that going to the cinema isn't just an activity, it's an experience.

Director Jake Scott manages to inveigle his father Ridley to put in a momentary cameo but it's Boyega who captures and holds the attention in a film offering a solid endorsement of the value of, well, film.
