Vodafone: “The Joy of Connection” - 60s

For all some members of the older generation like to gripe about smartphones preventing 'real' interaction, Vodafone prove the opposite in this poignant commercial. Celebrating the power of modern technology to bring people together even over vast distances, the ad sees an elderly father keep up tradition even when his daughter can't be with him in person.

Director Tom Speers does the emotional script justice here, balancing the obvious difficulty of being apart with the happiness and comfort of everyday interactions. Thus, the cold-water swim community is still very much together - with a little help from video

With people increasingly leaving their communities for work in a global job market, this ad is bound to hit home for those who find their numbers reduced at Christmas. Though physical distance may be more common than ever, Vodafone says, being together in spirit is merely a click, swipe, or tap away.
