Sounds of the Skeng

by Syd Briscoe

Stormzy: “Sounds of the Skeng” - 3 mins 24s

Stormzy educates the next generation of Grime artists in this jam-packed promo for new release 'Sounds of the Skeng'. Joined by his attentive nephews Allyas and Omari (who have stolen hearts online for their roles in the film), the rapper offers a masterclass from Merky University on how to grow up to be just like him.

With cheeky visuals courtesy of director Henry Scholfield, Stormzy and his mini-mes take a lighthearted romp through his musical history and cover the essentials: paying their dues, keeping haters in check, and, er, shoplifting from beneath a giant coat.

Part of the attitude which makes him stand out so far above his peers is that Stormzy - while hitting the usual notes of self-aggrandizing - doesn't take himself too seriously in what can be a po-faced genre. Staying down to earth allows his talent to shine unchecked - and influence the artists taking careful notes for their own work.
