What Elba Will Be

by Syd Briscoe

Squarespace: “Dream It” - 60s

Squarespace are skipping the Super Bowl this year, instead putting their budget towards hiring Luther star Idris Elba to front their latest campaign. The film opens with Elba sitting contemplatively on a kerb at night... and then things get musical.

'Que Sera Sera' may be more closely associated with football than musicals these days, but the delicate version Elba mimes lends the film an unexpected softness. It establishes a dreamlike tone as the actor floats through a variety of potential jobs, including boxer, fashion designer, and children's TV presenter.

Elba has a twinkle in his eye throughout, and the sense that he's having fun adds to the positive vibe of the whole film. It's also a whimsical way to illustrate the website builder's offer - that is, to make its users' dreams come true.
