Encore, encore!

by Andrew MacGregor

Smyths: “Toychestra” - 40s

Smyths bid to avoid Difficult Second Album Syndrome with another performance by Oscar - the computer-animated youngster who sang If I Were Toy' back in 2016. The tune may be the same, but there are now more strings to Oscar's bow - for one, he's now the conductor of his very own orchestra of llamas, Pikachus, and monster trucks, to name but a few.

This may not boast the same novelty as the original, but MPC's showman-inspired animation and lyrics such as "I'd master the Fart Master, for sure!" deliver the requisite feel-good factor. Furthermore, there's a smart continuation of the campaign's gender-neutral vibe as Oscar lines up next to a row of fashion dolls to avoid detection la 'Toy Story'.
