Settling Sleep Scores

by Syd Briscoe

Simba: “Made for Peace” - 60s

Travelling back in time to alter world events is an oft-used trope in media, but sending back comfortable beds to change the course of history is a new spin on things. This commercial for mattress brand Simba suggests that the Cuban Missile Crisis could have been settled over a game of tennis if everyone had just slept better... which is probably not entirely untrue.

Strong production design and costume work imbues the scenario with a fresh and irreverent sheen, as the Russians and Americans face off and the crowd enjoy the show with snacks and pampering. Quite possibly the most light-hearted take on potential annihilation we've seen recently - but it works.
