Your Biggest Fan

by Syd Briscoe

Short Films: “Strobe” - 8 mins

Celebrity and obsession collide with sinister results in this intriguing short film, written and directed by Taylor Cohen. Following the exploits of a teenage fan dedicated to fictional DJ Strobe, fleeting club shots are interspersed with her attempts to curry his favour on social media - which become increasingly disturbing.

Many projects have explored the dark side of celebrity culture, but the juxtaposition of violent fixation and almost psychopathic calm makes this a captivating watch. Lead actress Maia Mitchell delivers a performance with the measured intensity of a killer... even if her character doesn't quite sink to homicidal depths. Yet.

The detached behaviour of both artist and fan is nicely drawn, as Strobe fails to respond to escalating erratic behaviour with so much as hitting the block button. The simplicity of the ending, which rewards the protagonist for her bloody deeds, also leaves viewers with chilling food for thought.
