The long goodnight.

by Andrew MacGregor

Short Films: “Shemira” - 21 mins 42s

Shemira, we're told, refers to the Jewish ritual of watching over the body of a deceased person from the time of death until burial. In director Adam Wells's sensitively made short film, this solemn duty falls to a man called Myer Orlovitz (played by Lord of the Rings actor John Rhys-Davies), who muses wistfully on war, memory, and love throughout the night.

Clocking in at just over twenty minutes long, the film undoubtedly requires patience from the audience. Fortunately, Rhys-Davies (a million miles away from his time in Middle-earth) delivers a captivating lead performance, with his rich Welsh burr lulling viewers into a tale that has one or two surprises up its sleeve.
