Carry on gardening.

by Andrew MacGregor

Short Films: “Pampas” - 4 mins 59s

At one point in Jessica Bishopp's seductive short film, the narrator mentions the old saying that if you had a pampas grass in your garden, you were a swinger. Gardeners' World, this ain't.

Instead, it's a surprisingly tasteful insight into 1970s swinging culture and the unlikely role played by, well, horticulture. Pampas grass, it seems, implied a homeowner with especially exotic tastes.

As numerous voices reminisce documentary-style about these clues hidden in plain sight, we see model Naomi Shimada immerse herself in the era of prawn cocktails, Lambrusco, and paisley togs. Sensual and evocative, it's a much-needed fillip for the maligned Cortaderia selloana.
