Ethically Sourced Protein

by Syd Briscoe

Short Films: “Meat is Murder” - 15 mins

Far be it for DAVID to side with noted gammon Piers Morgan on, well, literally anything, but this short film suggests he might just have a point when it comes to vegans. This particular sect of vegans, at least, who agree to be followed by a cameraman as their activism takes a turn several degrees past militant and into ‘Saw' territory.

The drama - written by Matt Hynds and directed by Max Sobol - unfurls at pace, as the hapless group leader is ousted by a more intense faction of herbivores. His stunts have an Office-esque humour to them as they consistently fail, from leather jackets with vegan slogans to flinging sausages around a butcher shop to prove… erm, something.

We won't spoil the reveal, but the last few minutes of the film take such a sharp turn into horror territory that you may find yourself starting from the beginning again to pick up all the clues. This is affectionate, astute parody with a chilling twist - leaving viewers with both a laugh and a shiver.
