Only young once.

by Andrew MacGregor

Short Films: “In My Blood” - 2 mins 09s

At one point in Samuel Hicks's thoughtful insight into stock car racing, sixteen-year-old racing driver Kyle Gray tells viewers: "You're here for a good time, not a long time". Even if that means risking life and limb every time he takes the wheel, Gray already knows the track is where he belongs, and good luck telling him to hit the brakes.

In response, director-photographer Hicks renders Gray and his pre-race preparations in liberal slow-motion, capturing every pensive look and clutch of the wheel. This approach may frustrate speed demons, but it simply makes Gray's eventual gear shift all the more satisfying.
