Short Films: “Ali & Nina” - 7 mins 30s

The subtleties of film are explored in this intriguing Swedish short, which focuses on the relationship between a father and daughter. Ali and Nina's bond is strengthened by their shared love of physical film, as both work in the only remaining lab in their country which develops film of all kinds.

The emotional development is carefully drawn here, as the family relationship is cast against the delicacy and organic nature of film development. As cinematographers and creatives join the discussion about how and why they choose not to shoot digitally, the layers of connection between art and life are only further enmeshed.

With intimate visuals and a thoughtfully-paced narrative, this serves as a beautiful example of why maintaining aspects of the old world matters in the modern age. Digital may be infallible, the artists here suggest, but imperfections are what makes something truly perfect.
