Sevdaliza: Hear My Pain Heal

by Alice May

Sevdaliza: “Hear My Pain Heal” - 4 mins 42s

Dutch-Iranian artist Sevdaliza emanates a female strength you wouldn't want to mess with: brooding and powerful, she's a force to be reckoned with and makes music to match.

'Hear My Pain Heal' is an excellent example. It has that wavering, woozy trip-hop sound first created by Portishead and which evokes the intimate misery of a room in disarray after the party guests have left.

Ian Pons Jewell has matched the mood of the track with his equally angsty promo.

Filmed in the grandeur of a stately Italian home, the dim lighting both singles out the central character and envelops her in a velvet embrace as she drifts through rooms recalling fragments of her life.

It's disjointed and surreal - all the more so when we discover she's mourning her lover lying dead with his head obscured by the long lace cloth draped over a table. As she crouches beside him, his pristine dress shirt crumbles and leaves a hole, a hollow black void, in his chest. Somehow that unknowable cavity looks as inviting as it does repellent. But we don't see into it after all, and at the end the woman - who is indeed Sevdaliza - bares her self and her soul to lament him - the very act of which appears to shrink damage to the corresponding area of her own body.
