Bad Friend

by Andrew MacGregor

Rina Sawayama: “Bad Friend” - 3 mins 38s

Director Ali Kurr’s fourth collaboration with Rina Sawayama is a throwback to when people drank in bars and occasionally got into fights afterwards. Oh, those were the pre-lockdown days. Kurr’s spin on this, however, is more stylish than anything seen on Night Cops or closed-circuit television.

Shot in stark monochrome by DP Amelia Hazlerigg, the promo turns Sawayama into a Japanese businessman who just wants a quiet drink. Alas, (s)he’s joined by a bloke who’s more whisky than man… and unwittingly fuels the fire.

Like her cropped alter-ego, Sawayama is in no mood to celebrate as she muses on a broken friendship with melodic candour (“Put your hands up if you're going to let this go/Maybe I'm a bad friend”). A smart take on violent delights and equally violent ends.
