The last stand?

by Andrew MacGregor

ReThink HS2: “Last Christmas” - 87s

Anti-High Speed 2 group Rethink HS2 offer their own spin on Lovejoy’s Law with this ad set in woods threatened by what some deem to be a multi-billion pound white elephant. Scored by Annie Lennox and narrated by ubiquitous eco-warrior Emma Thompson, the ad sees a boy protect an ancient tree from destruction with… a knitted robin bauble.

This cuddly act of defiance inspires friends and family (plus a lesser spotted Chris Packham) to add their own decorations, culminating in an earnest plea for viewers to “stand for the trees”. Her delivery makes it sound like a New Age platitude, but, judging by recent government climbdowns, the group’s message has legs.
