The Heart of Gaming

by Syd Briscoe

PlayStation: “Heart” - 60s

PlayStation are dear to many gamers' hearts - whether as their first system or favourite console - and this suspenseful commercial takes that role to its logical conclusion. Director Romain Gavras channels stealth games and action movies alike with a dark and moody colour palette, as a camouflage-clad team infiltrate a secret facility for purposes unknown.

The action has a lovely science-fiction vibe, as fluorescent lights, mysterious pipes, and harvested organs all coalesce into an unexplained yet compelling set piece. More exposition isn't necessary for the viewer to appreciate the stark visuals - particularly when a familiar set of symbols appears scarred on each beating heart.
