First Past the Post

by Syd Briscoe

Plan B: “First Past the Post” - 4 mins 41s

There's a popular social media post which describes voting as public transport rather than marriage, getting you where you need to go instead of a lifetime commitment. Plan B breaks things down further in this inclusive, educational promo, explaining the UK's electoral system in terms everyone can understand.

Rather than have young voters baffled by political jargon - important aspects of the system kept intentionally obscure for politicians' own purposes - the rapper rams home the importance of tactical voting on the eve of the December 12th election. He manages to do so while taking swipes at right-wing politics and sleazy career power-seekers in the process, which is a bonus.

At just over four-and-a-half minutes long, this track might be the most coherent and condensed political studies lecture most listeners have heard - and is bound to make many of them research how to game the 'first past the post' system to good effect. Let's hope so, at any rate.
