Smart Oasis

by Syd Briscoe

New Zealand Transport Agency: “Distractions” - 71s

The New Zealand Transport Agency flips the script on distracted driving in this smartly constructed commercial. The film explores the myriad ways we're glued to our smartphones every day - whether it's small things like the screen being the first thing we see when we turn off our alarm in the morning, to friendly hang-outs becoming more like mutual internet sessions.

Director Jakob Marky has the tone spot on here, as the background noise of modern life swells into a cacophony without - as so many ads in a similar vein do - putting the blame on the phone user. This campaign frames driving as an opportunity to escape the digital clutter, and its message comes across all the more effectively for it.
