Riding the Big Apple

by Syd Briscoe

New York Times: “Tyshawn Jones” - 4 mins 30s

This delicate profile of American professional skateboarder Tyshawn Jones explores the self-fulfilment which comes from doing a job you truly love. Shot by Danilo Parra for the New York Times Magazine, the film is rendered in modish black-and-white as it follows Jones through an energetic city jaunt.

There's a lovely stillness to this which is often missing from sports-focused work, as it's made clear that Jones and his associates find personal liberation and satisfaction through their urban adventures. A final shot of Jones and his dog, in particular, ensures he's seen as a fully-rounded, determined person rather than an action figure.
