Keeping the Lights On

by Syd Briscoe

NHS: “We Are Nurses” - 90s

The nurses who keep the NHS running take centre stage in the health service's latest recruitment drive. With fears of staff shortages on the advent of Brexit looming in the background, it's heartening to see the backbone of the country's hospitals and home care services celebrated for all they do day after day.

There's an impressive amount of diversity shown here - not just in the nurses themselves, who come from all races, ages, and genders, but in the variety of jobs they're shown dealing with. From elderly care to pastoral comfort, surgical assistance to mental health intervention, the true scope of such a career is shown to be challenging - but also rewarding.

While this may well encourage people to consider becoming a nurse, it's also a timely reminder of just how much the underfunded and underappreciated NHS does for our divided little nation. Maybe if we all agree upon that for a minute, we can finally start to bridge some gaps.
