The One and Only

by Syd Briscoe

Microsoft: “Be the One” - 60s

Earlier this month, the San Francisco 49ers' Katie Sowers became the first female coach to take part in the Super Bowl. This reflective commercial for Microsoft goes right back to the start, however, and muses on how and why Sowers got to her trailblazing position.

Directed by Peter Berg, the inspirational piece opens with a letter Sowers wrote to herself as a child and builds on her juvenile ambition - as she explains what drove her to groundbreaking success. Rather than just a story of personal growth, this is a narrative firmly focused on uplifting others.

As the coach herself says, it only takes one person to break a boundary and allow thousands of others to spill through the newly-created gate. Sowers refuses to be seen as a separate category from her male counterparts, and this confident showing suggests she's not going to back down any time soon.
