Passing Out

by Syd Briscoe

Metropole Ruhr: “Don't Miss It Again” - 75s

While many of us are feeling a bit sorry for ourselves at the moment, this tale of missed opportunities may inspire more appreciation for the little things. German development company Metropole Ruhr presents the tale of a bloke whose main pastime is missing the boat - passing on the chance to invest in some of the biggest innovations of the past century.

From developing a fledgling Brooklyn to rebuilding East Germany after reunification, the man's business sense seems to be on the, er, fritz as he turns down suggestion after suggestion. He even tells Jeff Bezos where to stick it... although recently many would support him on that count.

There's a lovely sense of humour throughout the film, as each crummy decision leads the central character to crash through another floor of his life - until the end finds him making a much less fantastical trip downwards. This is charming work which doesn't gloat over misfortune so much as poke a little fun at it.
