Rhythm of the Night

by Syd Briscoe

McDonald's: “Night Workers” - 60s

The unsung heroes of the night take centre stage in this latest ad for McDonald's. No, not Batman and his cohort - the stars here are the early shift workers, all-night standby staff, and everyone in-between who keep things running while the rest of the world is asleep.

There's been a trend for ads staring invisible protagonists lately, but director Sam Brown brings his own flair to proceedings as the film delves into fire stations, hospital wards, and roads being cleaned while party-goers stumble home as the sun comes up.

A delicate cover of 'Rhythm of the Night' (originally arranged for a previous McDonald's ad directed by Jake Mavity) adds to the dreamlike film here, giving proceedings a fantastical touch when the invisible workers are finally revealed (probably best not to mention the original artist right now). Lovely work which celebrates McDonald's part in the, er, food chain.
