Balls to that.

by Andrew MacGregor

McDonald's McCafé: “Ball Pit” - 30s

Over two years after his acclaimed ‘Madness’ spot for McDonald’s, director Tony Barry returns for another playful jibe at try-hard coffee shops. Aptly scored by a cover of Fifth Harmony’s ‘Worth It’, the ad sees a woman order “just a latte” in a nightmarish blend of coffee house, nightclub, and, erm, children's soft-play centre.

The latter is rich given the brand’s overall zest for indoor play areas. Given the circumstances, however, one should perhaps give the golden arches the benefit of the doubt. Overall, as McDonald's shift to a drive-thru, delivery, and takeaway model courtesy of Covid-19, the ad is a light-hearted reminder that coffee sans bells (balls?) and whistles is still available.
