Dark Ballet

by Andrew MacGregor

Madonna: “Dark Ballet” - 6 mins 26s

Music fans and concerned onlookers have pondered how Madonna would bounce back after her iffy performance at this year's Eurovision Song Contest. Answer: a six-and-a-half-minute promo inspired by the life and death of Joan of Arc and festooned with charged religious imagery. Yep, that'll do the trick.

Madge aka Madame X is content to sit this one out, however, with performance artist-turned-rapper Mykki Blanco instead delivering a sinewy turn as Joan of Arc. It's a good job director Emmanuel Adjei's broiling visuals are up to scratch - the track itself is a vocodered nightmare that borders on heresy.
