LinkedIn: “Grimsby United” - 60s

Professional networking website LinkedIn can help people find work at both an international and local level, according to this documentary-style ad. Set in the once-thriving fishing town of Grimsby, residents who feel they've been left behind by economic changes strive to find new paths through life in their community - with the help of the advertised service, of course.

Those with even a basic knowledge of LinkedIn might have expected an ad full of gleaming skyscrapers and sharp business attire. Needless to say, the brand subvert expectations through a coastal setting and director Amy Becker-Burnett's judicious use of film grain.

Whether the so-called "power of connection" will be enough to rally communities like Grimsby remains to be seen, but, at a time when the powers that be seem to favour division over unity, the website's message has its merits.
