A Motor That Matters

by Syd Briscoe

Let's Get Checked: “Mark & Gavin” - 2 mins

Bowel cancer isn't a disease often discussed in Adland - unlike, say, it's pink-ribboned cousin breast cancer - and this touching film for Let's Get Checked intends to bring the little spoken-of illness into the spotlight. The piece focuses on the long-lasting friendship between two men - one of whom is, sadly, no longer with us.

Gavin proves to be a fitting narrator for the piece, explaining his friend's diagnosis and eventual passing with a measured, quiet tone which speaks to stoicism in the face of grief. It's a stillness which makes it all the more powerful when he does break down, overwhelmed with the untimely loss.

The film makes careful effort to humanise Mark beyond being just a cancer patient, focusing on the men's shared passion for motorbikes and the legacy their friendship has left behind. It's a tearjerker, certainly, but it's also a very effective way to raise awareness about a frequently-overlooked condition.
