Automatic Driver

by Syd Briscoe

La Roux: “Automatic Driver” - 4 mins 38s

Elly Jackson aka La Roux returns from a five-year musical hiatus with nostalgic comeback single 'Automatic Driver'. The perma-quiffed artist draws on retro video game graphics and the double meaning of 'driver', treating viewers to an arcade-style golf game with some trippy visuals that are, ahem, well above par.

Replete with neon colours, day-glo highlights, and bursts of Eighties blacklight, director Valentin Guiod's playful aesthetics contrast the song's forlorn lyrics - lamenting lost love with such lines as "But then you find you're lost in the fight/ And now you've broken the love of your life". A strong return to form for the often enigmatic singer.
