The Beat

by Syd Briscoe

Icky: “The Beat” - 2 mins 53s

Beer bellies are brought to their logical conclusion in this surreal film directed by Neda. Paying irreverent tribute to Beyoncé's pregnancy photoshoot - among other cultural mainstays - the three-minute-piece combines blood, beats, and birth to offer an outstandingly hedonistic look at bringing new life into the world.

Like a particularly aggressive celebration of the dad bod, paunches are patted, beer babies thrive, and the rotund are rubbed amongst all the bacchanalian action. Imbued with equal parts joy and terror, the combination of heightened visuals and hints of gore bring a visual power to the film which is hard to ignore. And, indeed, why would you want to?
