Speak Up

by Syd Briscoe

ITV: “Britain Get Talking” - 60s

An unusual ad break intends to get Britain talking in a new campaign for ITV. Amidst a sea of commercials trying desperately to capture and hold viewers as attention spans decrease ever further, the channel takes a far more low key approach with this spot - conceived in conjunction with mental health charity Mind.

In part, this is because it has nothing to sell: the film attempts to draw attention to the uptick in children suffering from mental health issues without support. Thus, key phrases are embedded in silent shots of familiar shows - Coronation Street, The Jonathon Ross Show, The X Factor, et al.

Director Nez has the tone just right here - the visuals establish a serious mood without being solemn, while the ad's persistent silence leaves space for families to take a minute to check in with each other. With any luck, this will give more kids the opportunity to speak up about their fears.
