Melody of Love

by Andrew MacGregor

Hot Chip: “Melody of Love” - 4 mins 19s

Given that Hot Chip's upcoming seventh album is entitled ‘A Bath Full of Ecstasy' (complete with New Age cover art), it's safe to assume the band are in a good - perhaps hallucinatory - mood. Fortunately, promo director Nima Nourizadeh is on the same wavelength as he delivers this spacey effort for single ‘Melody of Love'.

Filming the likes of Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard from the neck up, Nourizadeh toys with light and shadow as faces are eerily transposed on top of one another. So far, so brooding - but the piece still has a trick of the light up its sleeve.

As more and more heads join the fray against a white background, the cast run the gamut of emotions as joy turns to sorrow and back again. This gives the promo an unexpectedly moving edge, as the band's strain of Eighties euphoria takes flight.
