H & M: The magic of Christmas

by Syd Briscoe

H & M: “A Magical Holiday” - 3 mins 19s

Following their last epic Christmas ad (directed by Wes Andersen), H & M employ director Johan Renck to conjure a very modern fairy tale for this year's festive offering. Starring Nicki Minaj, Jesse Williams, and John Turturro, the film features a father telling his daughter a bed time story... which comes to life.

The execution here is delightfully quirky, as the tired dad skimps on the story's details (the kid finds Bad Santa's address... because the internet) and the kid interrupts to change or question things. The performances are spot on, from Minaj's inexplicably British 'Wisest Thingy' to the confident kid at the centre of the story - not to mention Tuturro's gleefully wicked turn as Santa's evil brother.

Excellent comedy and lovely design work mean the three minute running time flies by, and we'd happily come back for multiple viewings. It all adds up to a very magical holiday ad.
