Frankenstein

by Alice May

Editors: “Frankenstein” - 4 mins 29s

Well, this just gets better with every watch. On first listen, 'Frankenstein' starts out sounding like every other plangent plod-rock clunker from the early 2000s. Yawn. But suddenly it veers into unexpected territory and becomes a dancefloor banger with a nightmare beat... freaky, full-on and totally fresh.

It's fantastic. And Greg Ohrel's promo is in every way a match for it; tuning in to the sinister sexiness with the story of a jaded cop looking for bigger thrills than he's currently getting.

When bludgeoning hapless civilians into bloody pulps no longer fills the void in his soul, the cop spends his off-duty nights researching something infinitely more interesting... the possibility of bringing bodies back to life. Specifically one particular body, who could add some pizazz to his working life; turn the daily routine into a bit of fun... or performance art, even. So who better than the recently demised, er, 'Baeonse'?

The sinewy sociopath decides to put his fantasy into action.

Before you know it, he has exhumed his idol and made her his undead sidekick. Together they dance their way everywhere, from the police locker room to the bus stop to his own claustrophobic apartment. He is exhilarated.

Yet all good things must come to an end, and when Baeonse becomes sentient she no longer wants to be a part of the world he has created.

There's only one solution...

Terrific casting (especially the cop, with his scarily intense face) along with superb choreography ensure the clip gives something more with every viewing. Great editing by Cut+Run's Meg Thorne; plus Ashley Barron's excellent cinematography helps to really bring Ohren's atmospheric vision to life. As it were.
