The Key to Life on Earth

by Andrew MacGregor

Declan McKenna: “The Key to Life on Earth” - 4 mins 38s

Tousle-haired troubadour Declan McKenna forms an uncanny double act in this well-choreographed promo for ‘The Key to Life on Earth’. Director Will Hooper evokes Dostoevsky’s ‘The Double’ (and Richard Ayoade’s 2013 film adaptation) as two young men occupy a space on Earth meant for one.

McKenna’s ‘doppelgänger’, however, is actually End of the F***ing World star Alex Lawther, who brings subtle, baby-faced malevolence to the role. Rarely has a forkful of baked beans looked so threatening

The uncanny mood deepens as the two eventually don giant bug outfits for a fancy dress party. As fans of The Metamorphosis or Breaking Bad might say, it’s positively Kafkaesque.
