Not-so cracking contraptions.

DFS: “The Grand Sofa Caper” - 60s

This DFS winter sale plug starring Wallace and Gromit is a bittersweet affair. Since the death of Peter Sallis in 2017, Wallace has been voiced by Aardman Animations regular Ben Whitehead, and the furniture store’s latest sees him perform alongside ‘Curse of the Were-Rabbit’ alumnus Helena Bonham Carter. Talk about big shoes to fill.

Fortunately, Whitehead proves up to the task as Wallace, Gromit, and Lady Tottington (Bonham Carter) explore the DFS factory. As well as giving Aardman the chance to flex their claymation muscles, it’s a hard-working script that underscores the brand’s expertise and aversion to the use of “robotic gizmos”. Sometimes, Wallace, handmade is the way to go.
