The Odd Couple

by Syd Briscoe

Compare The Market: “Automated” - 60s

Sergei and Aleksandr have gone up in the world, according to Compare The Market's latest ad, and are now the proud owners of an almost entirely 'smart' home. The pair have long since transcended the original ‘meerkat/market’ joke, and have instead become something of a national institution... the furry, cravat-wearing kind.

That's what makes their appearances in commercials particularly pleasing, as adland gets more comfortable showing them behaving like the odd couple they are. It’s rarely been more apparent than here, as Sergei's drive to get things done clashes with Aleksandr's commitment to the good life in humorous ways.

The CG action unfolds amusingly, as usual, but there's a wider message about casual diversity to be considered. Does it matter that a pair of animated meerkats might be gay? No, but the fact nobody in this deeply bigoted country is up in arms about the insinuation does.
