Midnight Meeting

by Syd Briscoe

Comcast: “Rendezvous” - 60s

Technology foils teen romance in this trope-busting commercial for US broadband providers Comcast. A boy attempts to sneak into his crush's window after dark - dodging dogs, scaling fences, and hiding from parents along the way - only for his mobile phone to give him away at the last moment.

A doo-wop soundtrack adds to the film's retro feel, which means the sudden intrusion of modern life into the timeless teen motif provides an extra zing of unexpected humour. The performances are lovely too - particularly the deadpan dad who says no more than he needs to have the youth scurrying back into the night alone.
