Born to Die

by Syd Briscoe

Born Free Foundation: “Instagram Lions” - 2 mins

The issue of lions raised in captivity in South Africa is explored in this poignant film for the Born Free Foundation. What starts off as a touching story of a gamekeeper raising a lion cub soon begins to sour, as the animal becomes desensitised to humans while people pay to take 'Gram-worthy pictures with it.

The animation work here is lovely, giving the narrative a Pixar-esque feel which means the audience is even more shocked by the final narrative twist. There's nothing wholesome about the outcome, and the final betrayal as the now-grown lion sees its former protector profit from its death is nothing short of harrowing.
