Seeing in Style

Boots: “Darling” - 30s

This adroit parody for Boots demonstrates that sometimes, clichéd perfume ads aren't such a bad thing. Director Vince Squibb has the tone just right here, evoking luxurious fashion films and pretentious fragrance commercials as models cavort around a mansion.

There are lovely touches throughout which clue the viewer into the true nature of the film, pushing things just over the top enough to stand out. A director credit for 'Vincenzo Calamari' kicks things off nimbly, as does the overblown soundtrack... while things get really weird when the horse shows up.

All in all, this is a deftly executed piece of work which pokes fun at a certain aesthetic while taking all the best visuals for its own. Cheeky humour and a down-to-earth reveal tie proceedings up nicely, too.
