Extraordinary Everyday

by Syd Briscoe

Blue Moon: “Routine” - 30s

Routine doesn't have to be boring, according to this gently surreal ad for US beer brand Blue Moon. A woman's commute doesn't seem to deviate much as the days progress... at least, until abnormal background events become ever more apparent.

From huge whales dwelling in fountains to people taking a balloon-based route to work, quirky VFX brings a sense of magical realism to an otherwise mundane scene. Also more subtly effective are the changing headlines on a newspaper - announcing women walking on the moon and the ozone layer being restored to pristine condition.

While "once in a blue moon" is a nice play on the brand's name and an effective way to suggest craft beer isn't just for special occasions, this ad has the added effect of reminding us that - with instant information transfer and all manner of wild technology developments - we do live in quite an extraordinary world after all.
