Five Star Work

by Syd Briscoe

Ally: “The Name is the Idea” - 90s

US financiers Ally intend to be, well, allies to their clients - as demonstrated in this entertaining ad shot by Ian Pons Jewell. The brand highlight the unusually staid nature of banking - many people stick with their first bank regardless of service quality - by comparing it to other industries which take their reviews more seriously.

Each vignette is well constructed, as director Pons Jewell takes us on an amusing tour through several two star-achieving businesses. From questionable dentists to baffling babysitters, they're a shady yet charming band of reprobates. The friendly sheen of the Ally employees seems positively saintly in comparison... and a laser gun run-in offers a neat sting in the tail.
