The Day Before You Came

by Andrew MacGregor

Abba: “The Day Before You Came” - 6 mins 41s

It was only a matter of time before the lockdown was immortalised in Lego brick form, but we didn’t expect it to sound like this. Scored by Abba’s ‘The Day Before You Came’, director Will Gould’s stop-motion animation condenses nearly two months of lockdown into six heart-rending minutes.

Gould’s blocky take on life before and after 23 March 2020 is both charming and upsetting, as the once chipper protagonist dolefully taps away at his laptop in solitude. His insistence on wearing his work clothes each day will chime with those still clinging onto a daily routine.

Of course, all anyone wants at this stage is a happy ending. We won’t give away too much, but it’s a sweet reminder that a two-metre distance is enough to forge new and meaningful connections. Just remember to mind your step.

Director: Will Gould
